How Long Do You Want Your Air System to Last?

How long do you want your air system to last? To many that is a silly question. We want it to last forever, or at least until you retire.

It is not impossible today to get 80,000 hours or 20+ years (at 4,000 hours per year) from a properly maintained air compressor. This potential increased service life is a result of manufacturing technology along with better filtration and improved synthetic lubricant.

It used to be that as long as you changed your oil and your inlet filter, you were good to go.  This is not the case today to get the most life out of your air compressor.

Here is what you need to do to get the most life out of your compressor.

  • Monitor the equipment temperatures and pressures on a daily, or at least a weekly basis. Any major change to indicate an issue?
  • Inspect and clean the inlet filter and any cabinet filters on a weekly basis.
  • Maintain oil level on a weekly basis.
  • Sample oil on an every 2,000 hour basis to make sure it is not contaminated.
  • Read the owner’s manual. (It’s amazing how many people don’t even know where it is)
  • Follow the maintenance checklist based on hours in the owner’s manual.
  • Keep a log for each compressor showing hours/temperatures/oil added/internal pressure drop.

These things sound simple, but many times they just do not get done until it is too late.  If this is the case for your plant, you should consider an automatic maintenance program of some kind to ensure that the compressors, which are the fourth utility, get service and run the 80,000/13+, that’s possible.

Maintenance Agreements come in many forms, some of which are below.

  • Fixed Priced Maintenance Agreement with Extended Warranty – usually the most expensive, but the most comprehensive giving you the peace of mind for an extended warranty but with a high fixed maintenance cost.
  • Fixed Priced Maintenance Agreement – Similar to the fixed cost but with no extended warranty. Can be more expensive because the fixed cost has to allow for any variable that would be possible to maintain your equipment during that period.
  • Time and Materials Maintenance Agreement – This agreement that is based on actual maintenance required each visit with parts, labor and materials charged only as required to maintain the unit in first class condition. This is usually done at a reduce rate.

The key to any maintenance agreement is that it happens without you having be concerned about the compressor being properly serviced.  If done by the right service organization, it just happens.

Whichever Maintenance Agreement program you choose, or you do internally, needs to be done so your equipment gives you reliable and efficient 80,000 hours/20+ years.
